Nail Care 101: Making Salon-Fresh Nails Last
What actually keeps acrylics, gel and nail art looking new — and the small daily habits that make the biggest difference.
A fresh set of nails looks flawless the moment you leave the chair — the real test is how they look three weeks later. Longevity has less to do with the product and more to do with a handful of small habits. Here is what actually keeps acrylics, gel and nail art looking salon-fresh, and what quietly wears them down.
Understand what you actually have on your nails
“My nails chipped” means something different depending on the service, so it helps to know which one you are wearing:
- Gel colour (own nails). Cured polish on your natural nail. Lasts as long as your nail grows without lifting — usually two to three weeks.
- Soft gel tips. Lightweight full-cover extensions glued over the natural nail. Flexible, and the most natural-feeling extension we offer.
- Acrylics with gel shade. Sculpted, durable extensions built up on a form. The strongest option for length, and the most resistant to breaking.
- Builder gel. A strengthening overlay, often chosen by clients who want structure without much added length.
Each behaves differently as it grows out, which is why “how long will this last” always gets answered properly at the chair, not online.
A good set should still look this clean in week three, not just day one.
The habits that actually extend a set
- Cuticle oil, daily, not weekly. This is the single highest-impact habit. Nails and the surrounding skin dry out constantly — oil keeps the extension flexible where it meets the cuticle, which is exactly where lifting starts.
- Gloves for anything wet or abrasive. Dishwashing, cleaning products and prolonged water exposure are the top cause of early lifting — water works its way under the edge of an extension before you notice.
- Use your nails as tools sparingly. Opening cans, peeling stickers and scratching labels puts direct lateral stress on the tip — exactly the angle nails are weakest against.
- Moisturise the whole hand, not just the nail. Dry skin around the nail bed cracks and pulls at the product edge.
- Don’t pick, ever. If an edge lifts, it is tempting to peel — this can take layers of your natural nail with it. Smooth any snag gently with a fine glass file, filing in one direction and never into the sealed free edge, and message us rather than prying it up.
Most “bad” sets are not a product problem — they are two weeks of dishwater and a peeled sticker label.
How long each finish really holds
- French and Ombré (own nails) — clean for around two weeks before the growth line becomes visible.
- Cat eye and stone accessories — the magnetic and set-in details hold as well as the base gel beneath them; no extra care needed.
- Nail art — sealed under top coat, so it wears exactly as long as the polish underneath.
A glass-glossy finish comes from a good top coat and clean prep — both are part of every service.
Seasonal care in Islamabad
Islamabad’s weather swings between two very different problems for nails, and each needs a slightly different habit.
In the humid monsoon months, the natural nail plate absorbs moisture from rain and heavy air, swells, then shrinks again in air-conditioned rooms. That constant cycle under a rigid gel or acrylic layer is what opens the tiny gaps where lifting starts. Dry your hands — including under the nail edge — thoroughly after coming in from the rain or washing up, and avoid long soaks in very hot water, which speeds up the same expand-and-contract cycle.
In the cooler, drier months, the risk flips: cuticles dry out, crack and pull at the edge of the product. Cuticle oil every evening and a rich hand cream straight after washing your hands keep the skin around the nail flexible, so the seal stays intact. Open cans and parcels with a tool, not a nail tip — cold, dry nails are more brittle.
All year, if you take off regular polish on your natural nails at home, an acetone-free remover is far kinder to the nail and surrounding skin.
When to come back in
As a general rule, gel colour looks its best for two to three weeks, and extensions (acrylic or soft gel) for three to four weeks before the growth gap becomes noticeable.
