Lash Extensions 101: Classic, Hybrid or Volume?
What each lash style actually looks like, how to choose for your eye shape, and the aftercare that makes a set last.

Lash extensions are the quiet workhorse of a low-effort beauty routine: you wake up defined, skip mascara entirely, and your eyes read “done” even on a bare-face day. But walking into a lash appointment without knowing the difference between classic, hybrid and volume is how people end up with a set that is not quite them. Here is the honest guide we give at the studio.
The three styles, in plain words
Classic
One fine extension is attached to each natural lash. The effect is what great mascara promises but never quite delivers: longer, darker, perfectly separated lashes that still look like yours. Choose classic if your natural lash line is already reasonably full, or if your workplace calls for subtlety.
Hybrid
A tailored mix: classic lashes for definition, plus slim handmade “fans” for softness and fill. Hybrid is our most-requested set because it flatters almost everyone — textured, fuller than classic, but nowhere near dramatic.
Volume and Mega Volume
Multiple ultra-fine lashes are fanned by hand and applied to each natural lash. Because each fibre is so light, a volume set can be dense yet still feather-soft. Volume suits sparse lash lines beautifully (the fans hide gaps), and mega volume is the full glamour option — brides, shoots, and anyone who loves a statement eye.
Good extensions respect the natural lash — density should never cost you comfort.
How we choose for your eyes
A good lash artist maps the set to your eye shape before opening a single tray: longer lengths at the outer corner lift round eyes; even lengths open up almond eyes; a doll-eye map (longest in the centre) softens deeper-set eyes. At your appointment we also look at the health and length of your natural lashes — the set is always designed around what your lashes can comfortably carry.
If a set feels heavy, it is wrong — the best compliment for lash extensions is forgetting you have them on.
Aftercare: the part that decides how long they last
- Keep them dry for the first 24 hours. Steam, showers directly on the face, and workouts wait a day.
- No oil near the eyes. Oil-based cleansers and rich eye creams break down the adhesive — switch to oil-free around the lash line.
- Brush daily. A clean spoolie each morning keeps fans in place and catches loose lashes before they tangle.
- Sleep smart. Side and stomach sleepers lose lashes to the pillow; a silk pillowcase genuinely helps.
- Skip mascara entirely. You will not need it, and removing it costs lashes.
Refills, lifts and honest alternatives
A well-kept set typically wants a refill every two to three weeks as your natural lashes shed on their own cycle. When you are ready for a break, please do not pick the set off — our gentle removal service protects your natural lashes.
And if extensions feel like more upkeep than you want, a lash lift and tint curls and darkens your own lashes for weeks with zero aftercare — often paired with brow lamination and tint for a completely groomed, makeup-free frame.
Common myths, quickly
- “Extensions ruin your lashes.” Correctly applied, isolated lash by lash, they do not — damage comes from overloaded sets and picking.
- “You cannot wash your face.” You must! Clean lashes retain better than dirty ones. Oil-free cleansing is the only rule.
- “Volume always looks fake.” Density is a dial, not a switch — a light volume set can look softer than heavy classics.
